Smoke alarms are an essential device in every home, protecting occupants and property 24
hours a day against fire and smoke. A smoke alarm provides early warning of
fire, minimising the chance of lives being lost and property being damaged.
Smoke inhalation is the major cause of death in domestic fires. A quality
smoke alarm is essential in waking occupants who otherwise may be overcome
by smoke as they sleep. In fact, smoke and toxic fumes do not wake people,
but rather places them deeper into unconsciousness. A PDL SD100 smoke alarm
is an investment in safety that every home should make. The stakes are high,
while the investment is low. PDL have developed the SD100 specifically for
the Australian market, ensuring that this product is the best possible
protection for Australian homes. Besides full compliance with Australian
standards and a clean, aesthetic look, the SD100 has been designed with the
electrical contractor in mind, making this smoke alarm remarkably easy to
Smoke Alarm Limitations
When installed and maintained correctly, smoke alarms are an excellent and cost-effective way of
providing your family with an early warning of possible fires. In every case,
however, smoke alarms have their limitations and should not be treated as a
substitute for basic safety precautions and fire prevention. The positioning of
a smoke alarm is very important. An alarm will not work if it is positioned
where smoke cannot reach. Examples include: – on the other side of a closed
door, – in the dead air space of a peaked ceiling.
The audible alarm will only wake people who can hear it. Those who have impaired hearing or who
are in an area away from an alarm may not be woken by a properly functioning
alarm. Specialist alarms should be used for people with impaired hearing.
Regular testing of smoke alarms is required to ensure they are operating
correctly. A missing or flat battery will provide no protection in the event of
a mains power failure. No smoke alarm should be used for more than ten years.
These units have a limited life and should be replaced at this time.
